AT Hop card

Frequently Asked Questions for Ferry Users

How can I use the AT HOP card to pay for ferry fares?

You can pre-load money onto your AT HOP card and use this ‘HOP Money’ to pay for ferry travel.  Using your AT HOP card to travel on ferries means you get at least 10% off single trip cash fares.

You pay for your travel by tagging on and off at the AT HOP card readers located in ferry terminals and on pontoons used by ferry services.

Your discount will be applied to your fare when you tag off, be sure to tag on before you board and tag off each time you disembark to ensure you get at least 10% discount off the single cash fare.

What are the benefits?

If you are an occasional ferry passenger then the AT HOP card may be a good option as you will receive at least 10% discount on single trip cash fares by using HOP Money as payment.

If you’re a regular ferry passenger and use ferry operator discount passes you may, at present, find it better value to continue using these products.  You may find it handy, however to keep an AT HOP card in your pocket for use on trains, to get free travel on the City LINK buses or as a back-up for your fare on ferry journeys.

In addition, using the AT HOP card you can:

  • Get at least 10% off single trip cash fares.
  • Travel free on the red City LINK bus service.
  • Use the AT HOP card to pay for travel on trains.
  • Registered cards can be topped up online for added convenience.
  • If a registered card is lost or stolen, the balance is protected within 24 hours of it being reported to the AT HOP call centre on 09 366 4467.

Can I use cash or the tickets and passes I normally use to travel on ferries?

Yes.  The AT HOP card is an additional product. Existing tickets and passes will continue to be sold at the usual ferry outlets. You can use your current tickets or cash as you normally do to travel on ferries.
