Rangitoto Island bays and beaches

Key information

Most of Rangitoto Island shoreline is rocky and volcanic, but if you explore further afield, you’ll be able to find a sandy beach or two to take a dip in on hot summer days exploring the island.

Firstly, there’s Mackenzie Bay, one of two natural sand beaches on Rangitoto and the perfect place to stop for a picnic and a swim. To reach Mackenzie Bay walk 2 hours 30 minutes west from the wharf. On the way make sure to enjoy the view of Rangitoto’s famous lighthouse.

In the other direction you can find Islington Bay, which is found on the east side of Rangitoto. Islington Bay can be reached via Summit Road or from the wharf. This walk will take you approximately 2 hours 30 minutes one way, so make sure you leave plenty of time to complete the return journey.

If you keep walking a further hour along a winding path from Islington Bay, you’ll come to Wreck Bay and its adjacent Boulder Bay. These bays aren’t as good as the other two for swimming, but they are of great heritage significance, as they were once a dumping ground for old ships. Best explored at low tide when some of the ships can be seen from the shore.

All the above bays are a considerable walk from Rangitoto wharf so sturdy walking shoes are recommended.
There is no drinking water along the routes, so plenty of water and snacks are recommended.
In summer months don’t forget swimwear and a towel so you can take a dip in the ocean.
There are no bins on the island, so it is recommended to bring to store your rubbish in to take home with you.
